IKEA Will Pay $50 Million Settlement Over Dangerous Dressers

Products Liability Lawyer: IKEA will pay a $50 million settlement to the families of the children who lost their lives when dressers, manufactured by the Swedish furniture retailer, tipped over. In 2014, two toddlers passed away after the MALM model dressers fell on them. This year, after IKEA developed and offered a new repair program, which included a free wall-anchoring kit, the faulty dresser fell on a child, causing another fatality. Back in June, IKEA recalled over eight million MALM chests and dressers plus 21 million other models of chests and dressers. In addition to the settlement, IKEA promised to donate funds to children’s hospitals.

Parents trust that a manufacturer will ensure that their products are safe for use by their children. Unfortunately, despite quality control measures, defective products could slip through the cracks and cause personal injuries and even fatalities.
